Brian Laidlaw plays Zimmy’s tonight, unofficial start of Dylan celebration

Twin Cities-based singer/songwriter Brian Laidlaw will be putting on a pretty cool show tonight at Zimmy’s in downtown Hibbing. You could even consider this an unofficial kickoff of the “North Country Dylan Celebration” in northern Minnesota, starting tomorrow with Duluth Dylan Fest and continuing next week with Dylan Days in Hibbing.

From 8-11 p.m., Laidlaw will perform a number of songs he wrote in tribute to Dylan and northern Minnesota as part of a state arts grant.

Laidlaw will be playing in Duluth tomorrow with a 5 p.m. show at the Electric Fetus and a 9 p.m. set at Lake Avenue Bar. These shows bookend the Dylan Fest concert at Weber Hall that evening.

It was interesting to listen to Brian this morning on Northern Community Radio talking about his background growing up around the gold mines of California and the parallels he saw with the Iron Range. He performed a wonderful song about Dylan’s complicated relationship with the Range.

Laidlaw often plays with the Family Trade, a collection of Minnesota musicians, some of whom will join him in Duluth.
