Something occured to me as I perused the list of people Gov. Mark Dayton appointed to the Metropolitan Council today. Lona Schreider of Brooklyn Park, who was reappointed, is the only person in history to serve on the IRRRB and the Met Council. She was Rep. Lona Minne (DFL-Hibbing) before she left office, remarried and moved to the Cities. She also holds the distinction of being the first woman elected to the legislature from northern Minnesota’s Iron Range.
I interviewed Schreiber for a column when Rep. Carly Melin (DFL-Hibbing) became the second woman elected from the same Iron Range district. Former Rep. Carolyn McElfatrick (R-Deer River), who served one term after her 2010 election, also represented a district that included Grand Rapids.
