County board, state house races heat up east Duluth

Duluth, Minnesota, news and cultureThe special election to replace the late Steve O’Neal on the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners will be next Tuesday, Jan. 14. District One includes much of eastern Duluth, where they’re also gearing up for an open state House race after the announced retirement of Rep. Tom Huntley (DFL-Duluth).

The Dist. 1 county commissioner race pits Duluth city councilor Patrick Boyle against former city councilor Jim Stauber. The race can be loosely characterized as a competition between a liberal, Boyle, and a conservative, Stauber, but there are personality and local issue considerations, too.

The pair recently took part in a candidate forum, which you can watch here.

Meantime, in the State House race, Pete Johnson will officially announce his campaign tomorrow, officially rounding out the field of DFLers to four. There are two Republicans planning a run as well. I haven’t heard of any others … yet.
