U.S. Curling team with MN/WI stripes earns attention

The 2014 U.S. Olympic Curling team

The 2014 U.S. Olympic Curling team, lead by John Shuster of Duluth, originally of Chisholm.

When the 2014 Winter Olympics begin next month in Sochi, Russia, many will be following the high profile athletes of hockey, skating and snowboarding. But as people here in northern Minnesota know, and others are starting to realize, there is a true “regular folks” team to follow in Sochi. The U.S. Curling team, which I’ve written about before, is composed of everyday guys working regular jobs and throwing rocks on the side. Lots of rocks. Enough rocks to get to the Olympics, beating some of the best curlers in the world on the way.

The mens U.S. Curling Team, or “Shuster Rink” if you prefer, faces long odds at the Olympics. The Canadians are the world power when it comes to curling, and much of northern Europe fields terrific teams as well. But some of these U.S. curling team guys were part of the American team that snuck up for a bronze medal in 2006, and who knows what they might do this time.

The widely-read web issues blog Mashable had a great writeup on the U.S. Curling Team, which you can read here. And if you’ve ever wanted to learn how curling works in a convenient infographic, well, Mashable has that, too.

So, I’m thinking Kevin James is in this movie? Who else? To the comments …
