‘Rhythmic biological pattern of life’ goes on

In Sunday’s Duluth News Tribune, Sam Cook writes of the last mail run of retiring postal carrier John Latimer, who doubles as the staff phenologist at KAXE-Northern Community Radio. (Phenology is a Tuesday morning radio show, and also the “rhythmic biological pattern of life”).

While John might not be delivering mail in rural Itasca County anymore, he is still observing his Grand Rapids, Minnesota, backyard, sharing his data, and encouraging people to explore the constant natural change going on all around us.

Congratulations John! When I moved from the “big city” of Hibbing out to the woods of Balsam Township in Itasca County, I realized I knew very little about these woods I’d seen my whole life. Thankfully, I’ve had John Latimer on the radio every Tuesday to help me out. It’s not that John Latimer tells you the names for everything you might see; it’s that he tells you good strategies for observing, differentiating and tracking things you see. Standing alone in the woods will never feel the same again.

And, as the story shows, if you have a question about a bird, an animal, a tree or something an owl coughed up, you can go ahead and ask John directly. He’ll probably give you an answer.
