My favorite weekends are Great Northern Radio Show weekends. They are exhausting, invigorating and inspiring. And another one begins today. The Great Northern Radio Show, my personal twist on the old variety show format, will broadcast live from Armory Square in downtown Park Rapids, Minnesota, this Saturday from 5-7 p.m. on Northern Community Radio.
At last check, there are a small number of tickets available, so I encourage you to call 800-662-5799 to reserve a spot (seating before 4:30 p.m.).
We’ve got a pair of fine bands in the show on Saturday. Country western folksters Tree Party is a Minneapolis-based band with roots in the Park Rapids area. The Sterling Roots is an Americana band that specializes in three-part harmony.

Park Rapids was a completely new town to me. I often fixate on the history of towns I don’t know, but what I quickly found was that Park Rapids had compelling present, as well as past. The community is very engaged and there is a dynamic arts scene that permeates the town. We’ll be breaking in the new Armory Square stage, a sign of Park Rapids’ commitment to reinventing itself for new times.
I hope you’ll join us in Park Rapids for the show. It will be a beautiful fall weekend, peak colors in the state’s northern half. Even if you aren’t there in person, the show will be a fine soundtrack for your early fall Saturday evening.
My family and I caught an hour or so on the radio during a fall-color swing through the area. My nine-year-old really liked the deer named Hroor-aaaaa-oooo.
