UPDATE: Jim Northrup is recovering from heart surgery and will not be able to join us in Walker on Saturday. We wish him the very best for a speedy recovery!

Hard to believe, but we are about to do the 13th edition of my Great Northern Radio Show. We will defy the bad luck of that number by traveling to the Northern Lights Casino in Walker, Minnesota, where on Saturday, Dec. 6 we will broadcast our live exhibition of music, comedy and storytelling about modern life off the beaten path.

This is our winter show and I’m taking a slightly different approach this year. Our December 2012 show in Bigfork and our December 2013 show last year in Fosston were both traditional “Christmas specials.” This year I’m going for the theme of “Winter Storytelling.” This is in keeping with local Anishinaabe winter storytelling traditions, which will be a part of this program, but will expand beyond that as well.

I’m particularly excited to have one of my favorite Northern Minnesota writers Jim Northrup be a part of this show. He’ll be a featured guest and will perform a number of his touching, funny and/or heartbreaking stories and poems. I’m looking forward to the music of Minneapolis-based Steve Kaul and the Brass Kings and Bemidji singer/songwriter Shannon Murray, too.

This is one of the more ambitious mixes of performers I’ve tried, so tune in for the unpredictable results! Call 218-326-1234 for free tickets. Seating by 4:30 at the casino, for the 5-7 p.m. show on Saturday, Dec. 6. Can’t get there? Listen on the radio or online.
