Climate change is the kind of issue that generates predictable political reactions. That’s why it’s good sometimes to change the tone, localize the story and talk in practical terms about the scientific observations people are making.

For instance, our forests are changing. Trees that once thrived here are being replaced by trees that once did better south of here. That’s not a political argument, it’s something that loggers and foresters are seeing plain as day. Animal migration patterns have changed over the past thirty years, again not for political reasons, but in observable patterns.

Considering the role of the natural world not only in our quality of life, but also our economy, the people of Northern Minnesota would be wise to seek more information, rather than bat around internet theories.

Tonight, Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy, in partnership with the University of Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP), will host a public convening on climate change, Climate Minnesota: Iron Range Convening, at Mesabi Range College in Virginia.

The keynote speakers are Will Steger, polar explorer and founder of Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy, along with IRRRB Commissioner Mark Phillips. Other guests include friend-of-the-blog John Latimer, KAXE staff phenologist, Jason Edens of Rural Renewable Energy Alliance and Shawn Callahan, owner of Green Gate Guest House. Audience members will have the opportunity to share their thoughts, observations and ask questions of the speakers.

The festivities start at the Mesabi Range College theater with a 5:30 p.m. Resource Fair, followed by the 6:15-8:45 p.m. Convening. Afterward, there will be a dessert reception. For more information, visit the webpage.
