Don Ness, Teague Alexy take book tour to Iron Range

12112462_1052995654740674_7175407367983960978_nOn Wednesday, Oct. 21, Duluth mayor Don Ness and musician Teague Alexy will bring their shared book tour across the Mesabi Iron Range.

Ness’s book is “Hillsider: Snapshots of a Curious Political Journey,” a self-published creative memoir combining essays, stories and photographs by the popular outgoing mayor of the Zenith City.

Alexy’s book is “The New Folklore: Lyrical Tales for Dreamers and Thinkers” from Northstar Press. Alexy, one half of the brotherly duo the Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, writes stories in the folk tradition which end up reading like old yarns. Several illustrators have added endearing and engaging artwork to the tales.

That’s very keeping with the music of Alexy’s solo career and with the Hobo Nephews, where new songs have a timeless Americana feel.

3781452In a neat literary partnership, Ness and Alexy will sign books together while Alexy plays music and tells stories.

The first stop on the Wednesday tour for Ness and Alexy will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Brewed Awakenings coffee shop in Grand Rapids. Actual Wolf Eric Pollard will be making a guest appearance.

Next, they stop at my workplace Hibbing Community College for a signing and a couple tunes from 1-2 p.m. in the commons.

The pair will appear at The Shop Coffeehouse in downtown Virginia from 3-4 p.m.

From 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., they’ll do another book signing at Chris Perry Gallery in Ely.

Ness and Alexy will close the night with an 8 p.m. book signing and musical performance at Insula Restaraunt in Ely.

This is a really cool way to do a book signing. You get to meet the authors, and buy the books if you are so inclined, but you also get a taste of entertainment and storytelling, too.

Plus, Don Ness on the Range! Maybe he’ll share some of his Duluth voodoo magic and get us an airplane factory before air dropping a bunch of hot people in cold weather running gear. Who knows?!

Alexy will tell stories and play music with his brother in my upcoming Nov. 7 Great Northern Radio Show at Larson’s Barn outside McGregor, Minnesota. You should buy tickets now because that one is going to sell out and be an absolute blast. I mean, it’s a radio show in a barn in the middle of nowhere. Crazy stuff.
