Hibbing native and world-traveling violinist Sara Pajunen will appear in her hometown for a special concert at Hibbing Community College on Tuesday night. Here is the information:
Exploring the Immigrant Story:  Violinist Sara Pajunen will perform Laatikko/Box at the Hibbing Community College Theater on Tuesday, November 24th at 7 p.m. This is a FREE multimedia concert.
Sara Pajunen’s Laatikko/Box, is a multimedia musical performance reflecting upon the immigrant journey.  In 2014, Laatikko/Box was commissioned by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis and through this project, brings a sampling of the University of Minnesota’s Finnish-American archives to the public. Laatikko/Box explores the emotions we experience when we step into unknown worlds.  In the performance, Pajunen combines the reading of archival material, recorded audio interviews with immigrants, live violin, voice, and electronic technology to create a poignant interactive sound piece. Laatikko/Box is a search for commonalities: between distant immigrant stories, and between the immigrant journey and our own journeys of change.
Sara Pajunen is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artists Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

More than a year ago, Pajunen brought a program to the Hibbing Public Library about the immigrant experience. She’s been germinating these ideas for sometime, and it’s starting to culminate in an artistic way. Check it out if you can.
