Late Show writer Ariel Dumas of Long Lake, Minnesota, and comedian Maria Bamford of Duluth competed in a “Late Show Accent-Off: Minnesota edition” for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

This was a very enjoyable Minnesota-centric web extra from the Late Show with Stephen Colbert:

Comedian Maria Bamford from Duluth and writer Ariel Dumas from Long Lake flexed their Minnesota bonafieds in this “Late Show Accent-off: Minnesota Edition” showdown. Well worth a watch.

Nice to see and hear all these authentic Minnesota references on national television. To use my “Fargo” rating scale, Oh, ya!

On a side note, Stephen Colbert has become my go-to late night host. Smart, funny, in-depth interviews with the right mix of whimsy and wit. A mental surprise most every night.

Naturally, he’s getting killed in the ratings by Jimmy Fallon. That’s how it is for Minnesotans. We think we’ve got it all figured out. We did everything right. But we finish second.

Unless we face each other. Then we tie for first.

Comments

  1. Bamford’s takeoff on Delilah, talk radio host, is a hilarious.

  2. I’m a fan of Larry Wilmore, and even though the topic is serious, I thought this clip was quite humorous :

  3. and thought -provoking …to say the least.

  4. Wilmore is fun and interesting to watch. That segment was thought provoking. No doubt it would hurt some Minnesotan’s tender feelings though….

  5. I have said this many times over the years, we Minnesotans can gnash our teeth all we want about depictions of how we talk like that all we want, but the reality is to folks from many other parts of the country, that is what they hear. We can try to wish that away all we want, but it won’t alter reality. Embrace it I say and have some fun with it. It’s a good way to break the ice and make good conversation with strangers.
