Reina del Cid headlines July 6 concert in Chisholm

The Minnesota Discovery Center summer concert series continues Thursday, July 6, at 6 p.m. with Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Reina del Cid and her band.

This is one of my favorite Minnesota music acts. They’ve been on my Great Northern Radio Show twice, always a hit with the audience.

Reina del Cid sings with a light, playful voice juxtaposed with pensive, sometimes dark lyrics. The band, anchored by Toni Lindgren on guitar, makes a driving sound that can range from bluesy ballads to bouncy and bright. All that together makes for music that can make you laugh, cry and dance — often during the same song.

Reina del Cid will also offer a free songwriting workshop at the MDC earlier that day at 1 p.m. Call the Discovery Center at 218-254-7959 to sign up. There is a limited number of seats at the workshop. I’d take part myself, but I don’t know the difference between a B-chord and a cord of firewood. I can spell them, though. That’s what a journalism degree gets you

Tickets are available at the door: $9 adults, $5 youth (free hot dog with youth ticket). Advanced tickets available by calling 218-254-7959.

The Minnesota Discovery Center Thursday night concert series will continue with The Cactus Blossoms on Aug. 24 and Ben Kyle on Sept. 21. The voters of Minnesota make this concert possible, just like my radio show, through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Meanwhile, Reina del Cid says she has a new album coming out this year. I hear she’s playing some of the material on tour, so this is a show I’d recommend.
