Hibbing homecoming for Great Northern Radio Show

This Saturday, Oct. 14, my Great Northern Radio Show broadcasts live from the Hibbing Community College Theater from 5-7 p.m. on Northern Community Radio.

This is a “home” show for me, our first time back to the place where we broadcast the Great Northern Radio Show pilot episode in 2011. (I wrote more about the show last week). Our travel budget isn’t what it was last year, so we opted to focus this season on our “hometowns” of Hibbing, Bemidji and Grand Rapids.

Being close to home also allowed me to spend more time on the show’s theme, and to draw from material I know well. This is one of my favorite scripts I’ve ever written going into show weekend and we’ve got a good cast and musical lineup. I’ve already heard some guff from people that we’re not bringing in some famous traveling act, but trust me you’re going to like the Iron Range’s own Hobo Revival. And we’ve put considerable resources into a really hot house band led by Katie Houg, featuring Corey Medina, and made up of Northern Minnesota musicians.

I just love the feeling I get going into Great Northern Radio Show weekend. We’re smiling and tapping our toes at a show we’re making just for you. All you need to do is listen.

It looks like there will be a few tickets at the door, available at $10 for adults or free for kids and college students with IDs. Seating is limited, first come first served. Call 800-662-5799 for ticket reservations or, if it is late on Friday or Saturday morning, just come to the theater.

You can hear the show on Northern Community Radio 91.7 KAXE in Grand Rapids, Aitkin, Hibbing and Virginia; 90.5 KBXE Bagley, Bemidji, Cass Lake and Fosston; 89.9 FM in Brainerd, Baxter and Fort Ripley, and 103.9 FM in the city of Ely. The station streams live all over the world at http://www.kaxe.org.
