Northwest Wisconsin congressman Duffy to resign

U.S. Rep Sean Duffy

Some news from the other side of the Twin Ports harbor.

Politico reports that U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI7) will resign from Congress at the end of September.

Duffy told supporters in a Facebook post that he was leaving to focus on his family, including a new baby with health complications.

He writes:

With much prayer, I have decided that this is the right time for me to take a break from public service in order to be the support my wife, baby and family need right now. It is not an easy decision – because I truly love being your Congressman – but it is the right decision for my family, which is my first love and responsibility.

Duffy was elected in what was previously a Democratic-leaning district with the Tea Party wave in 2010. After the subsequent census and redistricting drew in more of central Wisconsin, the 7th District became decidedly more Republican leaning.

Since then, even capable Democratic challengers have failed to unseat Duffy, a lawyer and competitive lumberjack. The GOP remains favored to keep the seat, but there could be some intrigue here in an unpredictable political environment.
