Ondara to play Hibbing HS auditorium April 23

This Saturday, April 23, the singer-songwriter Ondara will appear on the Hibbing High School auditorium stage. Northern Community Radio presents the free concert at 7 p.m. thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Though pre-ordered tickets were available at www.kaxe.org, additional seating will be available first come, first served on the day of the show.

I wrote about the Ondara show in my column last Sunday. I also recorded a version of that piece for air on Northern Community Radio.

Like the work of Hibbing’s own Bob Dylan, Ondara’s music has a timeless quality. In fact, Dylan is the reason Ondara is here. Hailing from Nairobi, Kenya, J.S. Ondara came to Minnesota just to breathe the same creative vapors as the erstwhile Robert Zimmerman. Ondara has built a career for himself singing about the immigrant experience and the everyday joys and heartbreaks of modern life, times not all that different from previous times.

The Hibbing High School auditorium was built for old school acoustic resonance, designed to excel for an era without microphones. A voice like Ondara’s will absolutely saturate a place like this, so I highly recommend the show.

I’ll be there to deliver a brief introduction. I will highlight the historical significance of the venue and its connection to Bob Dylan. Then, we will hear from Ondara. Check it out!
