Big ideas at TEDx Silver Lake

On Feb. 23, TEDx Silver Lake will take place at the Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia, Minnesota. Based on the popular TED conferences, TEDx events welcome speakers to present interesting ideas that build community and grow knowledge. The theme for this event is “Crossing the Divide.”

I bring this up because I know that some Iron Range thinkers, iconoclasts and raconteurs dwell among my readership. I’m part of the committee that will select speakers for this event. The deadline to apply to present at TEDx Silver Lake is Jan. 12. Six or seven presenters will comprise the program. Ideally, you or your idea should have something to do with Virginia or the Iron Range. We’d love to hear your idea.

Not an orator? As a public speaking instructor by trade, I know that you’re capable of more than you think. Nevertheless, this will be a fascinating event to attend if you don’t want to be on stage. The evening program runs 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. There will be swag, appetizers and a cash bar. The night will spawn conversation, big ideas and inspiration. You can buy tickets online.

It’s hard to believe, but 12 years ago I gave a talk at TEDx 1,000 Lakes in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. I was skinnier, more optimistic and hazier on the details back then. I remember the day I spoke was absolute chaos at home with three young boys. The attempt is always more important than perfection.

Now, I look forward to seeing what a new cast of characters will share at TEDx Silver Lake. I hope you’ll join us. Like my golden oldie, these speeches live on as YouTube videos for years to come.
