Stuck in the middle with you: life in the ‘sandwich generation’

My latest column for the Minnesota Star Tribune, “In the quick of time — a dispatch from the ‘sandwich generation’ years,” is out now.

Readers here might remember the jolt my family took when my mom suffered a stroke in 2022. In one terrible turn of events, a relatively healthy child care provider in her early 60s suddenly needed a lot of medical care and years of recovery.

Today, my mom lives independently, but still needs help with driving and a few other things. Her life changed dramatically, and mine changed a lot, too. I find myself in a category I never thought would apply to me: “the sandwich generation.” This refers to people who care for minor children while also providing care to a parent.

This situation is tough for many reasons. There are good days and bad days. But if I’m counting blessings, one of the greatest is the perspective I’ve gained about love, care and the importance of time.
