A very special Bob Dylan Christmas

Mr. and Mrs. Brown somehow attend a movie premiere in Hibbing.

Today, you can read my latest column for the Minnesota Star Tribune, “In Hibbing, Dylan biopic taps the unknowable.”

The Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” opens Christmas night. Last Friday, Searchlight Pictures authorized a special advance showing of the film at Mann’s Cinema 8 in Bob Dylan’s hometown of Hibbing. In a rare twist, my wife and I went out (at night!) to see the show.

This Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet is already generating Oscar buzz. Like previous work from director James Mangold, it seems designed for precisely that purpose.

For me, the movie caught my attention for the same reason Bob Dylan’s music did the first time I heard it as a teenager in the 1990s. Where did these words come from? How did a guy from Hibbing do this?

Something divine happens in the creative process, and no one channeled this force more than Dylan did just two short years after his time in Hibbing.

Meantime, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I always enjoyed this music video from Bob Dylan’s Christmas album. Full screen, sound up:
