Bellwether school vote in Hibbing Tuesday

Iron Range newsTomorrow a smattering of elections will take place around Minnesota. An interesting one I’m following is the school vote in Hibbing, up here on the Mesabi Iron Range.

The school vote in Hibbing is over whether to renew a 10-year school bond operating levy that expires this year. Simple enough, perhaps, but the vote comes on the heels of announcements over other money coming into the schools from mining revenue and the “school shift” pay-down that emerged from last year’s legislative session.

I’m very curious how an off-year election in an increasingly grey Hibbing goes on a vote that would normally be winnable for the “Vote Yes” team. Demographics is destiny and the aging of the Iron Range is getting to be a major reality in local politics. I mean, it was already, but we have not finished the transition yet.

If the referendum passes taxes would stay the same. A failure would result in property taxes going down … at least temporarily. Much will depend on who shows up to vote. I expect it will pass, but I have my eye on it.
