Brown on the Air: FAMILY LANGUAGE

This Saturday’s edition of “Between You and Me” on 91.7 KAXE should be a lot of fun. From 10 a.m. to noon callers can share their stories of “family language,” or all the unique sayings that become part of the way members of a family talk to each other. With today’s holiday and the likelihood of lingering family members through the weekend, the sparks could fly. In my regular essay contribution I talk about a particular phrase that has recently become quite common in our household of three young boys: “It is what it is.” A cliche, yes, but one that holds unusual relevance in our world.

Tune in to “Between You and Me,” the unique show featuring the people and spirit of northern Minnesota, between 10 a.m. an noon on 91.7 FM in the area and streaming online all over the world at www.kaxe.org.

Meantime, happy Thanksgiving to one and all!

  1. Family language is a hoot! Our father had a loose relationship with standard English suffixes, so much so that after he passed away, we six siblings compiled “The Dictionary of Dadisms” so’s we would never them slip from the family lexicon. A few examples: Canadoo, basemento, argumento, fridgenzee. I remember blurting one of Dad’s arcane expletives (Holy Balls!) in front of my 2nd grade teacher and being rebuked soundly, through her tears of laughter.
