Brown on the Air: GEOCACHING!

This week on Northern Community Radio’s Saturday morning call-in and music program “Between You and Me” host Heidi Holtan will lead a conversation on geocaching. This is the distinctly 21st century hobby of finding treasure using handheld GPS devices.

I went geocaching once and it was fine, but one of my favorite things about it was seeing the old Dupont Building on our way out to a cache near Hibbing. I wrote about that building’s unique history before and after its demolition this winter.

A GPS can tell you where you are, but it can’t tell you why. In a world that’s largely been physically discovered, both are equally important.

You can hear “Between You and Me” from 10 a.m. to noon on Northern Community Radio stations like 91.7 KAXE (Grand Rapids, Aitkin and the Iron Range), 89.9 (Brainerd and Fort Ripley) and 90.5 KBXE (Bemidji and Baxter). You can also listen online at www.kaxe.org, where the show and my past essays are archived.
