The holiday project, light unto a dark universe

Today ends November and welcomes December, a month that, in America at least, brings a contradictory swirl of non-stop holiday and additional work duties. Have fun! Relax! Get your work done! We usually fire people before the end of the year! Don’t worry, though, we wouldn’t do that on Christmas!

The topic on Saturday’s “Between You and Me” program on Northern Community Radio is “Winter Projects.” For me, simply, my project on this warm weekend is finding a way to continue my personal tradition of adding one more string of lights to my outdoor Christmas light display every year. Warm weather means it will be perfect for climbing up on the roof to simultaneously test the bounds of my homeowners and medical insurance plans.

You can hear the show from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday morning on 91.7 KAXE in Grand Rapids, Aitkin and the Iron Range, 89.9 in Branerd and 90.5 KBXE Bemidji and Bagley, or streaming online at www.kaxe.org. My essay often runs in the first portion of the show, which relies on a mix of music, prepared material and listener phone calls.

To celebrate the onset of the holiday season, I conclude by offering footage of our family featured in the popular “Elf Yourself” web thingy. Happy Holidays!
