‘Second week of deer camp’ in Minnesota

It’s the world famous second week of deer camp here during the Minnesota firearms deer season. Some folks have been out hunting nonstop, the rest are coming back today to try, in earnest, to get the deer that eluded them during the first weekend, or to elude their families and responsibilities as was the original point from the beginning.

I was down in the Twin Cities Monday for a speaking engagement and saw this on the way down:

Dead deer on I-35

Uncovered trailers of dead deer are unpleasant, but a functional reality on Minnesota highways.

Pretty typical, as is this site at a gas station south of Eveleth on my way home:

Hunting safety a must for deer

This is ironic, but not for the reason you think.

If all of this disgusts, alarms or perplexes you, take some solace in my mild internet sensation “The Iron Ranger who would not hunt.”

Or, better yet, tune in to Northern Community Radio this Saturday 10 a.m. to noon to hear another rebroadcast of the Great Northern Radio Show we did live from Crosby last month. You can tune in 91.7 KAXE out of Grand Rapids and the Iron Range, 90.5 KBXE Bemidji and Bagley, 89.9 Brainerd or 103.9 Ely, streaming live at KAXE.org. The show will also run Thanksgiving, 10 a.m. to noon, on 103.3 KUMD in Duluth.

It makes for a pretty good second week of deer camp soundtrack, too, should the warmth of the shack prove alluring at that hour.

Incidentally, our next show is coming up soon — Saturday, Dec. 14 live from the Fosston Library Arts Center.
