Another Russian incursion in Nordic waters?

Today, media sources reported that the Finnish Navy fired depth charges at a mysterious object in its territorial waters below the Gulf of Finland. Though an investigation will be needed to determine the exact nature of the object, it was suspected to be a Russian submarine. If so, that would be the second suspected Russian sub incursion in Nordic waters since Sweden detected a sub off its shores late last year.

The first reason I bring this up is because the geopolitical consequences of Russian saber-rattling could become troubling. Further, many from Scandinavia and Finland emigrated to the United States, including thousands here to Northern Minnesota. Perhaps we’d like to keep tabs on our brothers and sisters abroad.

But mainly, I’d like to use this opportunity to refer you to the Hunt for Red October spoof I did last October when the sub was spotted near Stockholm.
